Welcome

An aerial map with the South Carolina Highway 22 Extension study area outlined in red. Major roadways, cities, and geographical features are depicted within the study area which is located predominantly in the southern half of Horry County, South Carolina.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), Charleston District (SAC) is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to assess the potential social, economic, and environmental effects associated with the construction and operation of the proposed South Carolina Highway 22 Extension Project (SC-22 Extension) in Horry County, South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), in conjunction with Horry County, has proposed to develop a new roadway that will provide congestion relief, improve hurricane evacuation, and improve access to needed services east and west of the Waccamaw River. The Proposed Action is primarily located in the southern half of Horry County, South Carolina (see figure above).

In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Corps is the lead federal agency for the preparation of the EIS. The EIS will assess the potential human and natural environmental effects of the Proposed Action and a range of reasonable project alternatives.

The purpose of this website is to inform members of the public and other interested parties about the EIS for the Proposed Action and provide them with additional information about the NEPA process and opportunities for public participation. Through this site, you can receive updates on the progress of the EIS, view documents as they become available, and submit comments.
